Flat versus Crown Green
A mixed group of St. Margaret’s bowlers gathered at the ground at 11:00 am on Saturday 10th June for what was to turn out a glorious day and a trip to Manchester to play Crown Green bowls against Lloyds Hotel Bowling Club. This was the return match that had been arranged following a match with Lloyds on our green last year. Apprehension was probably an understatement as we travelled to Manchester as only 4 of the 45 members had even tried Crown Green Bowling before. However, we were all determined to give them as good a game as we could. There was a warm welcome as we arrived and we were soon eating the lunch provided and trying the ale. The match started at the same time as the England game and their format allowed those interested in the football to watch the first half before having to join the bowls match. We played ten pairs games, four blocks on the green at the same time for 12 ends, then rotating in a round robin format. Finger peg, thumb peg? Well, we did score a few shots and a couple of our pairs actually won a round so all in all we acquitted ourselves well and enjoyed the match. The non- After the match we retired to a hall about five minutes walk away and were entertained and had an evening meal. After a couple of raffles we had the usual speeches except this time there County ‘selector’ who had been watching our progress called up Alan Hawes and Dick Crouch and presented them both with a bottle of wine for being the bowlers who had taken to Crown Green the best from our side. We left in good cheer at 10:30 pm and received a warm send off with the expectation by all on both sides to continue with this fixture.

Defibrillator Following the untimely death of a prominent member on the bowling green last year St. Margaret’s C.B.C. raised £1000 to purchase a Defibrillator which will be kept at our ground. 24 members from all sections of our Club attended a 5 hour training session given by St. Johns Ambulance and all are now qualified to give emergency resuscitation in the event of anyone collapsing at our Club in the future.

We are honoured to have County dignitarys in the membership this year. Don Mc Loughlin is Assistant Secretary and Match Secretary of the Leicestershire Bowling Association. Alan Shepherd is a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee. We wish them well, offer them our support and hope that they also enjoys these very demanding posts.
St Margaret’s C.B.C. have again this year supported the L.B.A. initiative and purchased a County Handbook for each member. This is an important development for maintaining the quality of the County Handbook at a reasonable cost. We hope all other Clubs in Leicestershire follow suit as our Handbook is widely known to be one of the best in the country. |

JUNIORS AND THE VULNERABLE
An initiative has been sponsored by the E.B.A. relating to European Law concerning the protection of children and the vulnerable. We support this initiative. All members of St. Margaret’s C.B.C. have signed a “Volunteer Disclosure Form” which relates to their past history. We have elected Mr. Cyril Berrill as our Child Protection Officer. Any enquiry about this matter should be directed to him.
