A TRIBUTE TO MR. LEN CORT    1923  -  2005

It was with great shock and sadness when I received a telephone call on Saturday, 23rd April, to say that Len had collapsed and died following the bowls match at Holwell.
He had enjoyed a very nice day out in York only 4 days previous with the Royal British Legion and on the Saturday in question at Holwell, I am told he had enjoyed and performed very well during the afternoons bowls match.
One could say that if we had a choice of which way to go, that would probably be our choice, but what a shock to family and friends left behind.
Len was one of life's gentlemen, and I first met Len when we were both members of St. Marks church on  Belgrave Road during the 1930s.  In fact Len met  his wife Hazel at St. Marks church and Hazels father was the church organist for many years.
Len served in the Royal Navy with distinction during the 2nd World War, and during the past year he was very much involved in the 60th anniversary of the D Day landings and he would have been just as busy this year, being the 60th anniversary of the end of the 2nd World War, with invitations to lunch with the Lord Mayor and several other celebrations.
Len worked for much of his working life at the hosiery company of Corahs with a brief spell at another hosiery company, Pex Ltd, before returning to Corah to finish his working life.
He enjoyed taking part in the social events of Corahs and played cricket for the company team.
He was also a much respected member of the Corah branch,  Royal British Legion  and    of course not forgetting the work he did for Corah Bowls Club and also the present club St. Margaret’s.
He was the clubs ‘100 Club’ secretary for many years and the money collected from the 100 Club helped a great deal to secure the alterations and improvements to the St. Margaret’s Co-operative Bowling Club as we know it today.
Len will long be remembered by all of his friends and colleagues in the bowling world and the Royal British Legion.
It was my privilege to have been associated with Len over very many years and along with everyone who knew him, I say, Thank You Len, and rest in peace.
